[NI01] Born on Crowder homestead, 6 mi SW of Mountain View, Howell Co, MO

Oct 1917 married Grace in a hotel lobby in West Plains, Howell Co, MO. Double wedding with another couple, the Floods.

1955 set the cornerstone for Nazarene Church

Carried mail in West Plains?

Worked on crew that put in Hwy 17 from Poe Hill to Mountain View, for the extra income.

[NI03] Lived in Hickman Co, TN as a child, and was definitely there in 1861 when his father enlisted in the Confederate Army. Moved to Howell Co, MO when he was twelve years old. After marriage to Phebe Tennessee Crowder, he bougtht the Crowder homestead from her family. Our farm is located on part of the old Crowder homestead, but not where the original house was. The original homeplace burned, and that portion of the property is no longer in our possession. (See photo of homestead.)

It is said that Tom Walker was fond of mules. In light of that, it was interesting to discover that Hickman Co, TN, where he was from, and Centerville (county seat) are called the "mule capital of the world" and have a big mule festival every year.

1870 census finds him living in Hickman Co, TN, working in cotton mill.

[NI04] Great Grandmother Tennie was a small red-headed woman. My grandmother Grace Walker (her daughter-in-law) admired her very much, and tells a story about her. When she needed peace and quiet from all of her children so that she could pray, she would throw her apron over her head to separate her for a few moments from her large family.

My grandmother also told me that when Tennie was a child and the Yankees came to her house in Giles Co, TN, the only food the family had left was a sack of potatoes. Knowing the Yankees would take them, they sat little Tennie on the sack alone, and the Yankees let her keep them. (Her father would have been away, fighting for the Confederacy.)

Discrepancy shows date of death recorded as the 7th or the 14th of the same month and year. Is it possible that she was not buried until the 14th?

[NI14] Always referred to as "little Paul," he apparently died in early childhood.

[NI23] Enlisted in CSA in Centerville TN on 17 Dec 1861 and was mustered out on 20 Feb 1865. H was in Regiment 48, Tennessee Volunteers, Companies B & G. He was a captain, and was captured by the northern forces in the battle of Fort Donelson, in TN on 16 Feb 1862. A prisoner exchange subsequently returned him to duty.

Apparently much of his large family lost touch after the war, and after some of them moved to Missouri it is said that Tom took a trip to Arkansas to trade a mule and accidently ran into his brother (or perhaps his wife's brother), Jake, whom he had not seen since the move.

Have seen date of death recorded as Aug 29, 1891, but stone at Walker's Chapel states 29 Dec 1891.

[NI24] I have seen Esther's birth recorded as 1837 instead of 27, but the stone at Walker's Chapel states '27. If born in 37, she would have had her first child at age 17. If born in 27, she would have had her oldest at age 54.

It seems most likely to me that she was born in 1837, but until I have further proof, I will list the date which is on her stone at the cemetery.

[NI46] 1802 Birth in GA
1828 Humphreys Co, TN (H.R. is born here)
1830 Dickson Co, TN
1840 Dyer Co, TN 1850 Hickman Co, TN
(Much of this obtained fron Martha Findlay, 227 Viceroy Houston, TX 77034, In July 1985)

Grace Walker has told me that Elijah was from England. Since his birth is recorded in Georgia, on suspects that perhaps his father was from England.

[NI47] Mathilda died the day after her son, William K., was born. Her husband remarried within the next two years, undoubtedly in need of a mother for his five children.

[NI62] May have been born in 1854. Name may have been L. E. instead of A. D.
